Ever wonder what language you should evaluate a student in? Or whether you should refer your student for a bilingual evaluation? Best practice indicates that you should evaluate a student in BOTH languages. However, in some cases, you might find out that the student is actually exposed to one language significantly more than the other. In those cases, you might only need to formally evaluate in one language and possibly only do some informal tasks in the second.
You can find out which language a student is exposed to the most by conducting a in-depth language history on the student. This is completed by measuring the exposure & usage of L1 & L2 by determining who the child lives with, their relationship to the child, the languages spoken & heard by the child each hour of the day across a typical week. This is an ABSOLUTE MUST when completing bilingual evaluations.
By completing an in-depth language history, this will also provide you information about what kind of bilingual the student is as well as provide you with guiding information for the language of intervention.
