From Referral to Decision:
Screening Bilingual Students and Distinguishing Difference from Disorder
This course provides SLPs with a practical, culturally and linguistically responsive approach to make informed, equitable referral decisions for bilingual and multilingual students.
About the Course
This course is intended for speech-language pathologists, speech-language pathology assistants, and other professionals who support multilingual learners and culturally and linguistically diverse populations. The content is particularly relevant to school-based professionals involved in referral, screening, assessment, and intervention decision-making. Participants will explore how to distinguish language differences from potential communication disorders and language characteristics that may indicate a communication disorder in bilingual/multilingual students.
Through the BRIDGE framework, participants will learn a practical, culturally and linguistically responsive approach to gathering information during the initial referral, collaborating with teachers and families, implementing supports within an MTSS/RTI framework, and determining when a comprehensive speech-language evaluation may be warranted. Participants will leave with practical strategies and tools they can apply immediately to support more informed, equitable referral decisions for multilingual learners.

About the Presenter
Liliana Diaz, M.S., CCC-SLP
Liliana Diaz, M.S.,, CCC-SLP, is a licensed bilingual English-Spanish speech-language pathologist and founder of Bilingual Speechie LLC. With over 12 years of experience, she specializes in supporting multilingual children in the areas of bilingual assessment, intervention, and culturally and linguistically responsive practices. Throughout her career, Liliana has worked in the public school setting and has served in leadership roles supporting bilingual SLPs, multidisciplinary teams, and educators in making informed decisions for multilingual learners. As the founder of Bilingual Speechie, she creates evidence-informed resources and professional education designed to help SLPs confidently and effectively support culturally and linguistically diverse students.

ASHA CEU Processing / Registration Fee: A $25 registration fee is collected through Zoom at the time of registration. This fee covers course registration and administrative processing, including submission of eligible participant information for ASHA CEUs. Participants must meet all course completion requirements to be eligible for ASHA CEUs. Payment of the registration fee does not guarantee ASHA CEU eligibility or award of ASHA CEUs.
Satisfactory Completion Requirements
To be eligible to have participation submitted for ASHA CEUs, participants must:
- Attend the course in its entirety.
- Complete the required post-course quiz with a score of 80% or higher.
- Complete all required course evaluation and attendance documentation.
- Provide all information required for ASHA CEU reporting.
- Complete all requirements by the stated deadline.
Participants who do not meet the satisfactory completion requirements will not be eligible to have the course submitted for ASHA CEUs.
Deadline: The post-course quiz, course evaluation, and any required ASHA CEU documentation must be completed within 7 days following the live course.

Cancellation Policy
Provider Cancellation Policy: Bilingual Speechie LLC reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a course due to unforeseen circumstances. If Bilingual Speechie LLC cancels the course, registered participants will be notified and will receive a full refund of any registration fees paid or the option to transfer their registration to a rescheduled date, when available.
Participant Cancellation & Refund Policy: Participants who are unable to attend should notify Bilingual Speechie LLC as soon as possible. Participants may request a full refund of the registration fee by providing written notice of cancellation at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled start time of the course. Cancellations received at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled start time are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the course and no-shows are non-refundable.
